Skinning Performance

Documenting a performance affords the opportunity to capture unique moments that can be more revealing than the act itself yet have plural interpretations. Lens based media has been plagued with questions of truth and authenticity since its advent; documentation of performance draws out these uncertainties. Performance is ontologically marked by a persistent presence and absence consequently this is inherent in the narrative of documentation. Performance and documentation exist in an oscillating relationship yet documentation has the potential to open the narrative of the original performance to new imaginings.

‘Skinning performance’ is exhibited by Zinzi Kennedy a local Footscray artist on the Billboard at Trocadero Art Space from the 1^st of February – 31^st of April, this multiplies the time and space of the performance, as it exists in variegated forms. Being displayed on the Billboard takes a work only experienced by a limited audience to the general public generating the possibility of new narratives being imagined as well as critical responses.
